Fuel, mileage and travel rules

Check fuel, mileage, toll and cross-border rules before and during the trip.

Your booking terms take priority

Availability, prices, limits and protection conditions can vary by pricing terms, branch and brand partner. Always use the terms shown for your booking as the final source.

01

Do I need to refuel my vehicle?

Follow the fuel policy shown in the vehicle details, booking confirmation or rental agreement. If your booking is full-to-full, refill to the required level before return and keep the fuel receipt or a photo of the gauge. Returning below the agreed level may incur the fuel difference and a refuelling service fee, which can be higher than the pump price. Do not rely only on another booking or previous rental experience.

02

Which type of fuel should I use?

Use only the fuel type stated in the rental agreement, inside the fuel flap, in the vehicle instructions or on the key tag. Do not guess from the vehicle’s appearance, price or experience with another vehicle. If you cannot confirm the correct fuel, contact the branch or roadside assistance before refuelling. Using the wrong fuel may cause vehicle damage and towing or cleaning charges, and may not be covered by protection.

03

What should I do if I use the wrong fuel?

Stop fuelling immediately and do not start or continue driving. From a safe place, contact roadside assistance or the pickup branch. Do not drain the tank or add another fuel yourself. Keep the receipt and follow the instructions for towing, cleaning, repair and protection eligibility.

04

Does my rental have a mileage limit?

Check the vehicle details, booking confirmation and rental terms to see whether unlimited mileage or a daily or total limit applies. If there is a limit, the booking states the excess rate, applicable area and any exceptions. If mileage is important for a long trip, confirm it before booking rather than waiting until pickup.

05

Who pays tolls, and can I drive across a border?

The renter normally pays tolls, parking and related administration charges. Payment may be made at the road, through an electronic device or charged later by the branch. Cross-border driving or entry into a restricted area requires advance permission; allowed destinations, documents, protection and fees depend on the pickup country and vehicle group. Do not cross a border unless the booking or branch confirmation expressly permits it.
